Supplementary Notes: Enlisted: Second Dragoon Guards 1890, Renmore barracks, He was born in Ballymanagh (Oranmore) Clarinbridge, Brother of Galway Businessman, Politician and Recruiting Committee member, Joseph Young. Educated in the Model School, Galway. An Excellent horseman, and was noted as one of the finest rough riders in the British army. HE later joined the Scots Greys, and became a riding instructor at Canterbury. On 13 August 1901, Young earned the Victoria Cross in Action against several companies of Boers under the Commandant Erasmus. the Boers were setting explosives , intending to blow up a railway line to prevent the train carrying troops reaching their comrades. Young ordered his men to attack and galloped ahead of his troops reaching the enemy first. He shot several of them and captured their commande, His bravery was commended by Field Marshal Roberts, and he was presented with his VC by KING EDWARD VII.
